Hey, Hillary: Even My Eight-Year-Old Gets It!

Fri Apr 04, 2008 at 11:14:51 AM PDT

Woke up early this morning in the middle of a driving Texas hailstorm and flipped on the TV to see if things were better in other parts of the world. Still haven't broken the habit of tuning in Morning Joe yet, although I AM working on it....

Flipped on MSNBC and, as I took my first slug of coffee, was treated to footage of Hillary on Leno, yukking it up over her lies about Bosnian sniper fire.

I snarled so loud in response that I woke the small person up -- and, after some snuggling that lasted until the next time they rolled the tape, my eight-year-old, Sadie, had some choice observations for Hills:

"Mommy, what made you yell?"

Sorry, baby, I didn't mean to yell, but they just showed Hillary Clinton on the Tonight Show, making jokes about sniper fire.

"Like in Bosnia?"

Exactly like that.

"But I thought she lied about that?"

Yes, she did. She told people that she had been under sniper fire and in great danger and the videotape showed that that wasn't true.

"But why would she lie about that?"

Well, Sadie, it's because she's been making it seem like her experience to be president is much better than Barack Obama's, and I guess she thought that it would seem more important if she had been shot at.

"Hmmm. That's crazy."

Well, maybe.

More snuggling.(Warm, early morning smooches and hugs from an eight-year-old are the best! Almost enough to make my blood pressure return to normal...but not quite....)

We were up early, so I let her stay snugged up next to me for a good while and, after a bit, they showed her Leno clip again.

Watch this, Sadie...

"Why are they laughing about it, Mommy?"

Because Hillary made a joke about it to Jay Leno.

"She joked about guns and bullets?"

Yep. Yep, she did. Is that a good thing to joke about?

"No!!! But why would she make a joke about it?"

Well, why do you think she did?

"I think it's because she's embarrassed."

That's pretty smart. I think so, too.

"I think it's because she doesn't want to get in trouble."

Me, too. That's exactly what I think.

"You know what it's like, Mommy? It's like when Reginald started the 'I Hate Lauren E.' club at school, and everybody knew he did it, and when Mr. Morrison caught him and asked him about it, he said he didn't do it, but when Mr. Morrison showed him his notebook he said he did it but it was a joke. But Mr. Morrison said 'I'm not laughing.' "

You know, Sadie. It's EXACTLY like that. Exactly.

I think she joked about it because she knew that Jay Leno was going to really give her a hard time about it, and she thought if she made a joke about it first it might stop him.

"That's smart, Mommy."

Smart? Maybe. But is it right?

"No, she lied. She should be ashamed. She shouldn't be laughing and joking about it, because people won't think she's sorry."

She shouldn't be joking about it because people won't think she's sorry.

I couldn't have said it better myself.
